This is the first time I saw this commercial and nearly brought me to tears. For those of you who don’t know Ken Griffey Jr. is the reason that I love sports, as far as I can remember I have idolized the guy. I don’t know the guy but I would love to sit with him for a few minutes and just talk to him about his career and what baseball meant to him (if anyone can set this up for me I would be eternally grateful). To me, Griffey is the GOAT (greatest of all-time) but it wasn’t just his skills that made him that. Yes, he was the ultimate five tool player, he hit average and power, he could steal bases with the best of them, greatest outfielder I have ever had the chance to see play and a gun for an arm. These weren’t what drew me in though.
What made Griffey special to me was his love for the game and you could see it from his smile and his backwards cap. The guy simply loved the game and because of that he made me fan. That’s why I still have a Griffey poster and pennant on my wall, that’s why I still look at videos of him playing, that’s why I cried when my grandmaw ruined my brand new pair of Griffey’s in eighth grade, that’s why I wore my Griffey gear to every Astros game they played against the Reds, that’s why I still have a Griffey All-Star jersey and a Griffey Mariners shirt . If anyone was to ask me who the greatest athlete of all-time was I would answer Griffey. If my son wants to play baseball I hope he plays with the passion that Griffey does and has a swing as pretty as his.
If Griffey would have never gotten hurt he would be the home run leader but he played the game right way and that’s why he’ll always be the best.
The game was made for Ken Griffey Jr. and Ken Griffey Jr. was made for the game.
God Bless and Sic Em Bears
